The flag of the KPA appears to be a variant on the North Korean national
flag. The blue of the national flag is black, and the red star is surrounded
by a gold circle and with golden leaves beneath it. In the canton of the red
part of the flag are the numbers "4.25" in gold, probably for 25
April, the anniversary of the founding of the KPA. There is Hangul (Korean)
writing in gold in both the upper and lower black portions of the flag.

Two panicles of rice, that is.
The writings seem to vary among different flags.

The obverse shows (instead of the party emblem) a red star on a white disc,
surrounded by a golden wreath of rice, with two additional golden panicles of
rice underneath. At the canton (within the red part of the army colour) there
is the date "4.25" in yellow; Hangul letters at the top and at the
bottom of both sides (in yellow except for those at the top of the naval
colour, which are blue). All the colours have yellow fringes, cords and
tassels, and are borne on red flagpoles with brass spearhead finials.

Divided horizontally, the top half is red with a symbol in the middle (more
on that in a sec), and the bottom half is made up of four blue and three white
stripes, with the white stripes being roughly half the height of the blue. The
symbol in the center of the red portion shows a red star over a blue wavy
ocean, with 10 or 11 yellow rays emanating from the water upward and outward
toward the edge of the circle behind the star. This scene is within a red
circle, which is within a white circle, within a blue circle, similar to the
KPAAF roundel.

Note that the blue at the bottom is as wide as the blue at the bottom of
the national flag; the two blue and two white stripes are as wide as the white
stripes on the national flag.

Just like with the KPAN and KPA flags, representing the air force service.
This flag is all light blue, but with the same star symbol in the same
location, the same gold Hangul inscriptions along the top and bottom edges of
the flag, and the same "4.25" in gold in roughly the same location
as the other two flags.

Actually there are three sky blue and three dark blue stripes near
the bottom of the flag, so that the dark blue at the bottom of the flag
is as wide as the dark blue at the bottom of the national flag; the three sky
blue and three dark blue stripes are as wide as the white stripes on the
national flag.
